We will take the freeway route on a 90 minute drive and not the scenic backroads (which is almost a 3 hour drive). We will meet up at the closed HARDEE”S next to I-985 on Mundy Mill (Next to Ameris Bank) at 8:30 AM. We will leave at 9 then drive to Falcon Field with arrival about 10:30. We will spend two hours at Airbase Georgia and then go to a local restaurant Hobnob at 12:30 for Lunch.
Airbase Georgia comprises a collection of World War II aircraft that are maintained and displayed at various air shows throughout the Southeast. During the scheduled visit, several aircraft will be undergoing maintenance and recertification; consequently, maintenance crews and crew chiefs will be available to address inquiries. Additionally, with some aircraft in maintenance mode, attendees will have the opportunity to observe operations from an engineering and maintenance standpoint. The facility is located at Falcon Field in Peachtree City.
We’re planning to have lunch at Hobnob in Peachtree City, which is just 4 miles away. A couple of years ago, the club visited the Hobnob location in Alpharetta and had a great experience. For details, visit hobnobatlanta.com and select the Peachtree City location.
I spoke with the curator a former Corvette owner, and if feasible, arrangements may be made to position an aircraft for a photograph featuring both our car and the plane.
Airbase Georgia has been redesigning its display of WWII and aviation artifacts. This does not apply to aircraft, or our larger items, such as the Link Trainer, the B-17 Ball Turret, and several uniform displays. Provided all the conditions can be met, the plans include a large open addition to the hangar for our static items (and hopefully visiting exhibits), and an interactive display section just inside the entrance.
